Hours after Israel ordered Palestinians to evacuate parts of the area, US President Joe Biden asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to postpone military operations planned for the southern Gaza city of Rafah. He reportedly tried to put pressure on him.

According to the White House, Biden reaffirmed his “clear position on Rafah.” In other words, Israel should not proceed with any invasion plans until it can demonstrate how to protect hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians on the ground.

Israel’s evacuation order was issued as Cairo negotiations on how to achieve a ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages broke down. Israel proposed a ceasefire that would last several weeks, but Hamas insisted on an immediate end to the conflict.

Seven months since Hamas massacred 1,200 people in southern Israel on October 7thth The evacuation order comes after the kidnapping of at least 252 hostages, with the possibility of a full-scale attack on Hamas resistance in Rafah and the killing of innocent civilians in the neighborhood. Concerns grew.

“President Biden updated the Prime Minister on efforts to secure the hostage deal, including talks taking place today in Doha, Qatar. “We have agreed to ensure that we remain open for assistance,” the White House said in a statement.

According to Israelhayom.com, “The Kerem Shalom crossing is located near Rafah in southern Gaza.”

Details of the proposal were not immediately made public.
