Here’s where Trump stands in public opinion after guilty verdict in ‘hush money’ case

Public opinion of former President Donald Trump has changed little since his conviction last week in a Manhattan hush-money case, two new polls show.

After Thursday’s verdict, Trump’s approval rating stood at 31%, the pollster said. ABC News/Ipsos Poll The numbers, released Sunday, are statistically unchanged from March, when the 77-year-old Trump’s approval rating was 29 percent.

The poll was conducted after a jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide evidence of payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair with the Republican candidate a decade ago ahead of the 2016 election.

President Biden’s favorability rating also remained roughly steady, with 32% of respondents in the survey approving him, up from 33% in March.

Half of Americans agree with conviction and 49% of respondents said Trump should withdraw from the 2024 election, but responses were split mainly along party lines.

More than three-quarters of Democrats (79%) said the former president should stop campaigning, and 52% of independents said the same, but just 16% of Republicans did so.

Meanwhile, in a survey conducted last year, 47 percent of respondents said they believed the charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg were politically motivated and not actually a prosecution.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted online May 31 and June 1 among 781 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

On the other hand, Snap HarrisX Poll A survey conducted after the verdict showed similar results, with 51% of respondents feeling the trial was “politically motivated.”

In a poll conducted the night after the verdict was announced, 30% of respondents said a conviction made them more likely to vote for Trump, 27% said it made them less likely to support the 45th president, and 44% said it had no effect on their vote.

The poll also found that Trump leads Biden nationally by one percentage point (43% to 42%), with 14% still undecided. When including leaning voters, Trump leads Biden 51% to 49%.

In the five-candidate race, Trump received 40% of the support, Biden 38% and independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 11%. Green Party candidate Jill Stein and independent Cornel West each received 1% of the support.

The HarrisX poll was conducted online May 30-31 with a sample size of 1,006 registered voters and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
