As I watched the tone-deaf and sad comments by Governor Hochul and State Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday, an idea occurred to me. Why would they go out of their way to say New York State is leaving the union?
And why stop there — declare a new civil war because, yes, Donald Trump is going to be president and we don’t want that!
Wow wow.
grow up!
I don't cry over politics.
I have seen many terrible performances by civil servants, but Hochul and James hit rock bottom.
Their displeasure showed New York was ready and eager to make a fuss with the new Trump administration.
There is no grace, no patriotism, only the ridiculous assumption that the worst-case scenario is inevitable.
Their perspective is so blinkered that they must be getting their fake news from news outlets that have a fetish for calling Trump Hitler and warning that he is trying to destroy America.
A rare compliment to Cam
By comparison, Vice President Kamala Harris' concession speech was full of grace and patriotism.
The end result was humiliating for her, but she still managed to hold on to her feelings for ten minutes, suppressing the urge to explode in anger and take revenge.
Of course, Hochul and James also asked the Trump administration for more money.
So you attack first and then say, “Give me, give me.”
Great strategy!
Certainly Mr. Trump will be moved to release federal funds.
Hochul and James are a two-person wrecking crew.
They are doing nothing but pushing New York closer to the cliff.
Businesses and residents are fleeing the clutches of money extortionists, making this election a childish act of defiance.
In a joint release, the companies announced they are “strengthening our partnership, including new dedicated staff, to address potential federal legal threats to reproductive freedom, gun safety laws, and other important issues.”
Hochul said his office has also established the Freedom Initiative to develop a plan to address any policy or regulatory “threats” from the Trump administration.
This is the right thing to do in Albany.
Having aides who can waste their time on this partisan nonsense is what causes the state to kill its pet squirrel.
live in a dark fantasy
When the two appeared together, Hochul opened his mouth and said with a grim expression, “We have weathered storms before'' and “We will overcome the uncertainty of the new administration in Washington.''
“We are ready to respond to any threat of political violence,” she added, apparently barricaded as MAGA hordes descend on the once-thriving Empire State to take away abortion rights. He seemed to imagine himself standing heroically behind the scene.
She could have checked the election results before spouting such nonsense.
About 3.5 million New Yorkers voted for Trump on Tuesday, representing 43% of the total turnout.
Although it remains a blue state, Republicans have clearly made inroads, and Hochul himself had a close call two years ago against Republican candidate Lee Zeldin.
No one is invincible, so she would be wise to make New York a better place to live and work than pick a fight with the new president and his supporters.
Additionally, Trump is a lifelong New Yorker and wants to help the city and state.
Threatening him is not the way to get that help.
Hochul also didn't help the state last week when he foolishly called people who voted for Republican candidates “anti-women” and “anti-American.”
There is nothing more anti-American than using everyday political debates to call your opponent anti-American.
James also successfully threatened the president-elect, warning that “we will use the rule of law to fight back.” . . We are ready to fight back. ”
Does the rule of law mean another fraudulent trial like the business fraud lawsuit she filed against the new president-elect?
Is it the rule of law that she has in mind, based on nothing other than her campaign promise to win over Trump?
end minor legal acts
New York deserves better, and it's not too late for Hochul and James to be better.
Mr. Hochul should do the sensible and sensible thing by forcing Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to drop the business fraud case against Mr. Trump.
Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of felony fraud, and his sentencing is scheduled for later this month.
If Mr. Bragg does not take action, Mr. Hochul has the power to pardon Mr. Trump, but it would be better if the case simply disappeared.
He will be President of the United States – will New York want him so humiliated and America itself reduced in the eyes of the world as a third world banana republic?
Mr. James may also drop his pending civil suit.
Oral arguments suggested that at least some appellate judges were deeply concerned about the apparent overreach of the case.
There were also questions about whether James even had the right to sue.
The truth is that all of the lawsuits in both states were aimed at harming Trump so that he would not be re-elected.
The lawsuit failed to do that. In the spirit of Tuesday's broad national ruling, now is the time to repeal the law and work with the new president, not against him.
In fact, President Trump said at Al Smith's dinner that he looked forward to working with Mayor Adams and Mayor Hochul.
They too should receive the same spirit.
Cooperation may not suit their politics, but it helps New York.
And that's their job.
