Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem considers investigating socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as a potential threat to NYC

Investigating a Mayoral Candidate?

In Washington, Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem is weighing the possibility of using her authority to look into Zoran Mamdani, a socialist candidate running for mayor in New York City. This consideration has raised eyebrows, particularly regarding whether Mamdani’s views on anti-Israel protests pose a public threat.

During a recent meeting of President Trump’s Homeland Security Advisory Committee, Noem hinted at exploring “authorities” that have never been previously utilized. She mentioned that the Department of Homeland Security possesses powers that, perhaps, could be significant in this context.

Mamdani shocked many by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the recent Democratic primary. Following that win, Trump criticized him as “a complete nut job” and suggested that law enforcement should consider taking action against him due to Mamdani’s stance on immigration.

After promising not to cut police funding while also working on freezing rent and establishing government-operated grocery stores, tensions have only intensified. Even some within his party, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have denounced his controversial rhetoric regarding Israel.

David Chesnov, a criminal defense attorney and advisory board member, expressed outrage over demonstrations in New York that have endorsed foreign terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. He lamented the visibility of Hezbollah’s flag in close proximity to Ground Zero, mentioning the 9/11 attacks.

Chesnov highlighted the alarming reality of individuals running for mayor who promote the same ideologies that led to such tragedies.

While he claimed he couldn’t remember making specific comments about Mamdani, he did confirm his earlier remarks concerning the pro-Hezbollah protests.

Rudy Giuliani, another advisory board member and former New York mayor, characterized Mamdani as a dangerous mix of Islamic extremism and communism, warranting further scrutiny.

When approached about a potential investigation, Mamdani expressed concern about Trump’s sentiments regarding Democratic candidates, questioning how such views could affect perceptions of immigrants more broadly.

He pointed out Trump’s comments calling for his arrest, emphasizing his position as a significant figure being the first Muslim and South Asian candidate in the city’s history. He asserted that this criticism could detract attention from more pressing issues he is focused on.

The advisory council, which operates with an annual budget of $800,000, advises Noem on national security measures, including preventing terrorism and managing emergencies.

In other discussions, Giuliani reportedly backed GOP candidate Curtis Swa in the mayoral race, insinuating strategies to counter Mamdani’s favorable positioning among Democrats.

Requests for comments from DHS officials and Giuliani have not yet received responses.
