Officers arrested Matthews on Friday for sexually assaulting an adult female victim near the intersection of Alamitos and Broadway streets around 2 p.m. It was later determined that he had sexually assaulted a female teenage victim 15 minutes prior to the incident near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Broadway.
“Following the sexual assault incident, officers were able to quickly locate and arrest the suspect due to their quick response,” a statement from the Long Beach Police Department said.
Investigators believe Matthews sexually assaulted another adult female victim near the intersection of Molino Street and Anaheim around 12:25 p.m. two days before the two incidents.
Matthews was charged with two counts of sexual assault.
Police say there may be other victims of sexual violence and are asking the public to contact detectives if they have any information that could help the investigation.
A similar incident in November enraged Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón's critics after he declined to file felony charges against a homeless man who assaulted a woman on a sidewalk.
KABC-TV spoke with the victim, Rebecca Pederson, who said she is angry that the man was not properly charged.
“Did this man not see any footage?” she asked. “I'm more angry than anything.”
