Bobcat Discovered After Homeowner Reports Possible Burglary in Washington
A homeowner in Washington, concerned by strange noises coming from inside their house, dialed 911 to report a potential break-in. To their surprise, responding officers found that the “burglar” was actually a bobcat lounging at the top of the stairs.
This unusual scenario took place last week in Kirkland’s Moss Bay neighborhood. Police managed to contain the wild cat, which was later returned to its natural environment by wildlife officials.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported to anyone involved, including the homeowner, the officers, or the bobcat, as stated by the Kirkland Police Department.
The police were dispatched after receiving a burglary report following the homeowner’s description of the banging noises. Upon arrival, they found the bobcat inside the house.
To ensure safety and properly handle the situation, authorities used a drone to track the bobcat’s movements within the home. This approach allowed officers to keep a safe distance while planning their next steps.
A video shared by the Kirkland police captures the bobcat growling while positioned atop the staircase, highlighting just how unexpected this house guest was.
The bobcat was contained in a separate room until officials from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived on the scene.
After being sedated, the bobcat was then released near Forbes Creek, close to where it had been found, according to police reports.
Authorities believe that the bobcat likely climbed a tree and jumped through an open window, possibly attracted by the homeowner’s cat.
The homeowner’s cat was eventually located and reported unharmed.
In light of this incident, officials have advised residents not to approach or feed bobcats and to keep a safe distance if they encounter one. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife further recommends that pet owners keep their pets indoors, particularly during dusk and dawn, as well as secure any small livestock and poultry.
