Honduran man faces charges for reportedly dragging ICE agent while trying to flee

Oklahoma ICE Incident Involves Assault and Escape

Authorities reported that an individual from Honduras, identified as Jose Melgar Rivas, 34, has been charged following an incident involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Oklahoma. The event occurred when agents attempted to detain him in Oklahoma City, prompting a struggle.

According to court documents, officers pulled over a vehicle on Tuesday, where Melgar Rivas, who was wanted by ICE, refused to exit. During the encounter, he reportedly accelerated the vehicle while officers were trying to remove him, resulting in them being dragged almost a block before he managed to escape. One of the agents eventually freed himself but sustained multiple injuries in the process.

ICE agents from Dallas participated in the operation. The agency shared photos depicting the injured agent, showcasing significant bruising and wounds on his arms.

Prosecutors stated that Melgar Rivas was apprehended a few hours later. Notably, he was photographed in handcuffs, surrounded by ICE officials after his arrest.

Attorney General Robert J. Troth emphasized the critical nature of protecting law enforcement officers, reiterating that people who attack or obstruct them need to be held accountable. Travis Picard, a special agent at Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), added that any violence against federal agents would elicit an immediate and robust response from law enforcement.

Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security reported a striking 700% rise in assaults on ICE agents and other immigration enforcement officials since the early months of the Trump administration. This has led to a commitment from the Justice Department to pursue legal action against perpetrators, with various defendants charged in connection to incidents, including a recent attack on ICE facilities in Texas.

In recent months, Los Angeles has experienced a surge in demonstrations against ICE. However, the Pentagon has since reduced the number of National Guard troops previously deployed to manage the situations, asserting that levels of “lawlessness” are declining.

On Thursday, Melgar Rivas appeared in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City, where he was ordered to remain in federal custody as further proceedings are awaited. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and fines reaching $250,000.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that this case is part of a broader national initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling criminal networks operating across borders.
