The House subcommittee investigating the origins of the coronavirus pandemic censured Daszak during a hearing Wednesday.
The panel announced that 59 page report and recorded interviews with six NIH staff and scientists involved in ecohealth research.
Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, said EcoHealth received millions of dollars in federal grants to conduct research around the world. revealed. Democrats and Republicans alike condemned Daszak’s contradictory testimony.
“We found that EcoHealth was nearly two years late in submitting regular progress reports to the NIH, and that EcoHealth failed to provide required reporting on potentially dangerous experiments conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. “In a successful effort to recover the NIH grant, Dr. Daszak discovered that EcoHealth had used taxpayer dollars to promote dangerous profits.” ,” Wenstrup said in his opening statement.
“Dr. Daszak has not been very cooperative with selected subcommittees, has been slow to provide requested documents, and has regularly glossed over the definition of gain-of-function research in previous testimony.” added.
“Let me be clear: I support global health research,” Wenstrup continued. “I support efforts to make the world safer. That’s why we’re conducting the study. Our concern is that this study, and others like it, will have the opposite effect and push the world further into the pandemic. It’s about putting yourself at risk.”
In addition to calling for Daszak’s disbarment and investigation, the committee recommended eight improvements to the federal grant process.
Lawmakers believe this will “improve the biosafety and biosecurity of high-risk research.”
