House Democrat voices concerns, calling Trump's State of the Union immigration remarks 'racist'

Trump’s State of the Union Remarks Spark Controversy

During the 2026 State of the Union address, Representative Janelle Bynum from Oregon labeled President Donald Trump’s comments as “racist.” She specifically addressed his challenge for the audience to stand if they agreed that the United States should prioritize its citizens’ safety over those living in the country illegally.

Trump urged, “If you agree with this statement, please stand up and show your support,” stressing that protecting American citizens was the government’s primary duty.

The Democratic members of Congress stayed seated for over a minute while the Republican side applauded loudly.

Bynum, who is considered a vulnerable incumbent by the National Republican Congressional Committee, expressed feeling anxious about the moment. “I think you’ll agree with the sentiment of supporting American people,” she said, “but I can’t align with the way he presented it.”

She criticized Trump’s language, asserting it was “thinly veiled racist and anti-immigrant” and offensive. Requesting clarification from Bynum’s office on how Trump’s statements encouraged lawmakers to discriminate based on race drew no immediate response.

Presidential remarks were made against the backdrop of a partial government shutdown, exacerbated by Democrats insisting on reforms to the agency central to Trump’s immigration policies.

Democratic leaders have proposed ten enforcement reforms for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and are withholding funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until their demands are met. The DHS had experienced a shutdown starting February 14th.

Among the proposed changes are bans on masks, elimination of loitering patrols, requirements for visible identification, and stricter warrant protocols for arrests of illegal immigrants in public. Republicans dismissed these proposals, insisting that Democrats first take action against “sanctuary cities” that obstruct federal immigration enforcement.

After the State of the Union, Bynum, who had earlier voted against the DHS, pointed out that Trump’s criticism of immigration crackdowns was just part of her overall discontent with his speech. “Tonight, I observed President Trump misrepresenting our nation’s economy, maligning immigrants, and reiterating divisive rhetoric. Frankly, I can’t say I was surprised,” she reflected.
