House Republican silences Jake Tapper with obvious fact after he accuses GOP of ‘walking away’ from border legislation

Rep. Mike Lawler (RN.Y.) shut down CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Wednesday by accusing Republicans of “walking away” from legislation supposed to address the border crisis.

A bipartisan group of senators has spent weeks hammering out the details of the bill, but most Republicans argue it won’t make any meaningful changes to easing the border crisis.

One of the bill’s most controversial proposals would still allow tens of thousands of immigrants each month and put immigrants who enter the country legally with valid asylum claims on a path to citizenship. . According to NBC News.

The bill would also require Border Patrol to “close” the border if it “encounters” an average of 5,000 migrants a day over a seven-day period. One obvious problem with triggering a shutdown is that migrants may be incentivized to avoid encounters at all, potentially becoming “fugitives.”Meanwhile, President Joe Biden says he will “close” the border. only if Congress passes a bill.

So Mr. Lawler did not take kindly to Mr. Tapper’s accusation Wednesday that House Republicans were “moving away from this compromise.”

“First of all, Jake, no one has actually seen the final details. And I think it’s necessary for everyone to actually see the details before making any final statements about it.” Lawler told Tapper.

After Lawler explained why the border needed to be secured, Tapper asked Lawler if he thought there was a “disconnect” between the bill, which has yet to be written, and House Republicans who oppose it. .

Lawler’s response ultimately silenced Tapper.

“With all due respect, you have not seen this bill yet, and interestingly in recent weeks the media has been pressuring us to agree to a deal that was not actually agreed to. “Why don’t we see?” “What are the final bills? And let’s see if they pass, and then let’s negotiate,” Lawler told Tapper.

“President Biden and the Biden administration now have the authority to actually begin enforcing our laws, but they are choosing not to do so. And that’s a big part of the problem here.” he added.

Democrats and the media have argued that Republicans are increasing their opposition to the Senate bill because former President Donald Trump doesn’t want Biden to take credit for easing the border crisis. But the truth is that the bill’s critics simply believe it will do little, if any, to resolve the crisis.

Moreover, the bill provides no accountability for Biden’s policies or for a president who clearly refuses to use existing authorities to stop the crisis.
