Telecommunications disruptions in Iran have persisted for around a month. There’s limited coverage from mainstream media, making it tough to grasp the full situation about the protests and the currency’s decline. Many Iranians are desperate to express their frustrations about the hardships imposed by the current regime. Some have turned to decentralized technologies to amplify their voices.
A person using the name “Darius” shared with a news outlet that the Iranian authorities have shut off street lights out of fear that videos from protesters might surface online. He mentioned that people are resorting to using smartphone flashlights, calling the situation quite bleak, and remarked that Iran is surpassing North Korea’s level of censorship.
He described life as “hell”—without internet, money, media, or external support.
Underground Church in Iran
Due to the ongoing unrest, the underground church in Iran has suffered greatly. A pastor named Alaossian, whom a reporter interviewed over the weekend, expressed his concerns about the violence on the streets. He stated, “This regime is genuinely evil. It’s not just about rules or international norms; it’s about true malevolence.”
When discussing what message he wants to convey to US leaders and the European Union, he emphasized urgency: “Act. Act now. This is an emergency. People are in dire need. The regime has confiscated their guns, and a genocide is happening regardless of one’s beliefs. I want Iran to be free. As a Christian and a pastor, I feel a duty to stand with the people and advocate for them.”
Alaossian believes that God has given him a platform to raise awareness on these issues.
“I love Iran. I love America. America needs to take action.”
Canadian Pastor Dr. Mohsen Kazemi
Dr. Mohsen Kazemi, a senior pastor of a church in Canada who emigrated from Iran, spoke about how many of his church members still have family in Iran. In an interview this January, he confirmed that not just internet communication but also phones have been disrupted.
Reflecting on the past few decades, he mentioned the numerous promises made during the 1979 revolution. Citizens were assured a better life and that the wealth from oil would benefit them, but disillusionment set in quickly, especially for those who criticized the government.
Kazemi noted that the regime’s oppression has escalated. Despite Iran’s rich natural resources, most citizens live in poverty because these resources are diverted to terrorist organizations. The recent currency crisis sparked widespread protests as people reached their breaking point.
He believes there is a longing for freedom, a decent standard of living, security, and personal choices among the populace.
Iranian Ministries Thrive
Hormoz Shariat, founder of Iran Alive Ministries, noted that it has become a continuous broadcaster staying connected with the Iranian people. He indicated that while the people remain hopeful, the government is increasingly fearful. Unlike before, where citizens were afraid of authority, the dynamic seems to have shifted now.
Shariat identified the current protests as distinct from previous ones due to the focus on economic collapse and essential resources. He pointed out that the Iranian people are uniting around exiled Prince Reza Pahlavi.
Many Christians in underground churches are reportedly facing severe hardship, with government raids on homes leading to imprisonment and fatalities. However, a significant number of Muslims continue to turn to Christ through dreams and visions, despite these challenges.
Military Presence Near Iran
A sizable naval force has been stationed close to Iran, but the President hopes to avoid activating it. An analyst remarked that this might serve as a leverage point against Iran’s vulnerabilities, noting that the regime is currently at its most frail, politically and economically, since the revolution in 1980.
Moreover, the analyst highlighted that Iran’s allies did not come to its aid during a recent brief conflict, which underscored its isolation.
Another expert indicated that since that conflict, Iran has struggled to enrich uranium. Current negotiations with the US revolve around Iran halting its nuclear ambitions, yet doubts persist regarding its commitment to such measures.
Prophetic Implications of the Conflict
A pastor has expressed that he’s been monitoring the conflicts involving Iran, the US, and other nations due to their potential prophetic meaning, referencing biblical prophecies. He urged Christians to remain confident, believing that Christ will return soon.
