Hundreds Demonstrate Against Trump's Proposal to Upgrade the Kennedy Center

Protests Erupt at Kennedy Center Over Trump’s Plans

On Friday, hundreds gathered outside the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, to voice their opposition to President Donald Trump’s renovation plans for the venue, which has recently been closed for safety issues.

The gathering demanded that Trump be removed from his position as chairman, citing his “failure to protect and manage it,” as reported by ABC News.

The Hands Off the Arts organization, which organized the rally, anticipated a strong turnout with musical performances, speeches, and personal testimonials planned before participants formed a human chain around the building. This protest was just one of several events the group has held outside the center this year.

Video clips captured the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC, performing in front of the venue, with a drag queen in attendance, while Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) addressed the crowd. He expressed his disbelief at Trump’s stance on the building, wondering aloud about the level of insecurity someone must have to threaten demolition unless their name was on the structure.

On Tuesday, Trump posted a message on Truth Social, stating:

The Board of The Kennedy Center today agreed, almost unanimously, to close the Building for Safety reasons, and so that it can begin the process of Reconstruction. The closing will take place immediately; however, the Renovation and Reconstruction, which is a very large and complex job, cannot begin until such time as the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board’s approved name. If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place. The attorneys from the DOJ will ask for an expedited appeal. In the meantime, 17 Million Dollars, raised by President Trump, has been put into The Kennedy Center account to keep it afloat. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Following reports of a section of the ceiling collapsing, prompting the center’s closure, Trump remarked on the venue’s disastrous condition, warning that it had been in a “virtual state of collapse” for years. He asserted that, had the venue been open during the incident, it could have resulted in tragic consequences for innocent visitors.

Protesters were also seen on video chanting “Hands off! Hands off!” outside the Kennedy Center on Friday.

Earlier in April, reports shed light on ongoing issues with malfunctions and disrepair within the venue, illustrating the need for substantial renovations.

Additionally, in August, a legal filing by the Trump administration described the Kennedy Center as “structurally unsound, fundamentally unsafe, and embarrassing to the Nation’s Capital,” emphasizing the urgent need for its renovation.
