Hundreds of frozen waffle products sold at major grocery and retail stores have been recalled due to the risk of Listeria monocytogenes contamination, food manufacturers say.
TreeHouse Foods is a food processing company based in Oak Brook, Illinois. It reminded me of Friday waffles. “This issue was discovered during routine testing at our manufacturing facility.”
Treehouse said Friday there are no known illnesses associated with the potential outbreak.
The recalled waffles included popular brands such as Best Choice, Target's Good & Gather and Walmart's Great Value, and were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada, the manufacturer said.
Consumers may have some of the recalled products in their freezers.
Food packages typically have barcodes that indicate when they were manufactured and on which factory line. TreeHouse Foods encourages customers to check their freezers for frozen waffle products and search for the appropriate product code. posted on the website.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Listeria monocytogenes is a serious infection that poses the greatest risk to the elderly, immunocompromised, and pregnant women. It can cause fever, aches, headaches, stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions and diarrhea, officials said.
Experts say the incubation period for this bacterium is 3 to 70 days.
Treehouse Foods did not respond to a request for further comment.

The waffle recall comes on the heels of Bruce Pack, a major meat packaging company, recalling approximately 12 million pounds of meat, some of which was sent to New York school cafeterias.
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture is conducting an internal investigation into the handling of Boar's Head after the famous brand recalled more than 7 million pounds of cold cuts due to listeria contamination.
The disease has killed at least 10 people and hospitalized dozens.
Boar's Head operated a dirty, insect-infested meat factory with dozens of health and safety violations over the years.
