Teen Takeover in New Jersey Beach Town Prompts Police Response

A chaotic scene unfolded in a New Jersey beach town as hundreds of teenagers and young adults occupied the area, leading to multiple arrests and an increased police presence ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

Long Branch police apprehended six individuals on Tuesday night after an unapproved “pop-up” event gathered a large crowd at Pier Village, a well-known beachfront destination.

According to authorities, the situation escalated with some attendees reportedly fighting and jumping on parked cars, which spread the disturbance to nearby streets and promenades.

Footage captured dramatic moments, showing a mass of teens racing through the intersection of Chelsea Avenue and Ocean Avenue, while police attempted to control the crowd. One witness, Anthony Pizzi, shared that the scene was chaotic, describing the fear of people screaming and running, with attempts to get into parked cars.

“Resort security stepped in and told me I had to go back inside because they had it all locked down,” Pizzi recounted.

In response to the situation, a significant force of 139 officers from various units was dispatched to restore order after a mutual aid call was made by the Long Branch Police Department.

Police in riot gear managed to disperse the crowd by 9:15 PM, but the uproar prompted city officials to impose an 8 PM curfew that evening.

The disturbance had a substantial number of attendees arriving by train, which disrupted New Jersey Transit services for up to 45 minutes during peak chaos.

City management expressed serious concern over the incident. Charles Shirley, director of Long Branch Management and Public Safety, emphasized that disruptive gatherings like this would not be tolerated, stating the city’s readiness to act whenever public safety is compromised.

Following the unrest, two adult women and three minors from Newark were charged with disorderly conduct, while a juvenile from New Brunswick faced charges related to escape. Ongoing investigations also looked into instances of aggravated assault and vehicle theft.

No additional arrests for other crimes were noted.

The unrest prompted local authorities to ramp up security measures ahead of the approaching holiday weekend, with assurances of a robust police presence to deter potential violence.

On the same day, incidents occurred in Rhode Island where crowds overwhelmed two separate beach locations, leading to three stabbings. Police reported that 51 people were arrested in New Hampshire after various fights erupted at Hampton Beach.

Authorities continue to investigate the Rhode Island stabbings, and no suspects have been identified yet.
