Hurricane Kiko Weakens, Hawaii Prepared for Rough Seas

Honolulu – Hurricane Kiko is losing strength as it heads towards northern Hawaii this week, but Aloha is gearing up for potentially dangerous waves and life-threatening rip currents at local beaches.

Once a formidable major hurricane, Kiko is now classified as a Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that this weakening trend is likely to persist, as the storm encounters unfavorable conditions for further development.

The NHC also announced that Kiko is expected to downgrade to a tropical storm by the end of Monday.

As of the latest updates from the NHC, Hurricane Kiko is situated less than 500 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, and about 675 miles east of Honolulu.

The storm is currently moving northwest at 14 mph, and the NHC predicts it will maintain this trajectory in the coming days.

On its current path, Hurricane Kiko is forecasted to pass north of the Main Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In response to the storm’s approach, the governor of Hawaii declared a statewide emergency over the weekend, which will remain in effect until at least September 19 unless it’s lifted earlier or extended.

This emergency declaration has allowed for the mobilization of resources aimed at safeguarding public health and safety in anticipation of the storm’s potential impacts.

“To ensure safety and preparation for our communities, state and county agencies are ready to deploy resources to address damage caused by the storm, secure critical infrastructure, and respond swiftly,” said Governor Sylvia Luke. “We encourage residents and visitors to stay updated, adhere to official guidance, and prepare accordingly.”

Additionally, the declaration enables the Hawaii State Guard to assist local and state officials in their response efforts.

Big Waves and Rip Currents at Hawaiian Beaches

The swell generated by Hurricane Kiko is building steadily and is expected to peak along the eastern shores of the Hawaiian Islands from late Monday through mid-week.

The NHC has warned that these conditions could result in life-threatening waves and rip currents.

Kiko has fluctuated between Category 3 and 4 levels over the past week as it has moved across the warmer waters of the tropical Pacific.

According to the NHC, Kiko is encountering fewer favorable conditions for survival in the Central Pacific due to challenging upper-level winds and wind shear.
