Rescue Efforts for Canadian Woman Amid Healthcare Struggles
Glenn Beck, co-founder of Blaze Media, alongside his team, is currently collaborating with some members of the Trump administration to assist a Canadian woman who, feeling lost without the support of her country’s healthcare system, has come to view medically assisted suicide as her only escape from a life filled with pain.
The following day, on Canadian national media, the Saskatchewan woman’s husband expressed heartfelt gratitude for Beck’s attempts to help Jolene Van Alstyne, despite efforts by media to portray U.S. involvement as mere “political posturing” and a distraction from serious issues.
“If it were me, I think they would have put a gun to my head a long time ago.”
During a particularly emotional episode of “The Glenn Beck Program,” Beck opened with a message of thanks. “First of all, I just wanted to say thank you so much. It seems like you’re a very popular person. You’ve opened a lot of doors for me,” he said.
Sandeen, Van Alstyne’s husband, shared that the couple has faced significant challenges during the eight years since Jolene’s health began to decline. “We’ve navigated a challenging healthcare system, enduring long waiting times,” he explained. He noted the ongoing deterioration of her health conditions while waiting to see specialists and ultimately for surgery.
Jolene suffers from a rare parathyroid disease known to cause severe symptoms like nausea, extreme bone pain, and other serious complications, which further complicate her condition. Sandeen mentioned that the immobility caused by her illness has led to other health issues, including diverticulitis and depression.
Although she has undergone several surgeries, she still requires a crucial procedure to remove overactive parathyroid glands. However, the local healthcare system currently lacks surgeons qualified to perform this surgery, and she faces hurdles in getting referrals due to local endocrinologists not accepting new patients.
Sandeen criticized the Canadian healthcare system, labeling it “completely overwhelmed,” attributing issues to mismanagement and insufficient funding, as well as a rise in immigrant populations. In fact, a government report indicated that around 23% of Canada’s population is foreign-born, adding to the pressures on the healthcare system.
As the public healthcare system appears to fail Van Alstyne, she’s been contemplating the option of euthanasia, a route that has become alarmingly frequent in Canada. Recent figures show that euthanasia programs are rising among the top causes of death.
Recently, Dr. George Carson, an approved physician for the medical assistance in dying (MAID) program, confirmed he evaluated Van Alstyne and gave her approval for the procedure. Yet, Sandeen reassured Beck, saying, “She wants to live.” Despite the unbearable pain and challenges, he emphasized her strength, remarking, “If I were her, I would have put a gun to my head a long time ago.”
Beck assured Sandeen that he and his wife were committed to helping, declaring, “We’re praying for you. Millions of people are praying for you right now, and we’ll do everything we can.” He mentioned he’s been in touch with some members of the Trump administration, working towards gaining support for Van Alstyne to receive care in the U.S.
As Beck concluded their conversation, visibly emotional, he promised to call back with “good news.” The efforts to facilitate her surgery remain ongoing, hanging in a delicate balance against systemic healthcare struggles.
