‘I Can Support’ Conditioning Disaster Aid to Ensure Lessons Are Learned, We’ve Done It Before

On NewsNation's “Dan Abrams Live” Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) said disaster relief has had conditions in the past, and California's focus is on helping people. However, conditions need to be created to ensure that lessons are learned. Because next time I'll have to explore that.

Mr. Cuellar said:[I]It's understandable if you're going to set “conditions” to make things better next time so you can be stronger for the next disaster. But just punishing people just because it's a blue state or something happened[s] I don't think we need to do that to become a red state in the future. But will we set conditions to strengthen the lessons learned next time? You should definitely consider it. But…we should focus on people in need of help, and if we need to put some conditions in place to strengthen it next time, definitely I support it, but Don't just punish someone because their state or city happened to be blue. ”

“What we have to do is first focus on helping those families, the people who have lost their homes, the people who can never go back home, the children, the families, the mothers and fathers,” Cuellar said previously. ” he said. that's what we need to focus on [on]. Let's talk about politics later. But first, let's focus on those who need help. We've been doing this for years and we can do it again this year. ”

Then host Dan Abrams said:[F]For example, your Congressional District in Southwest Texas was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when historic flooding caused $190 billion in damage, left 200,000 people without power, and killed more than 100 people. I did. There was a lot of criticism around. Not enough emergency shelters were ready to open in Houston, and many were without power for weeks. The Obama administration then imposed rules requiring federally supported rebuilding efforts to take into account the effects of climate change. The Trump administration rescinded those rules. However, it seems that the situation is not new. ”

Mr. Cuellar replied: “Yeah, I'm not saying the conditions are going to be the other way around now. Yes, that's absolutely true. We did it. We want to make sure we learn the lessons and move forward from there.” But again, my focus is always to help people in need, and if I add certain “conditions”, I want to make it better next time. Remember to make us stronger when disaster strikes. Hurricanes, fires, disasters, earthquakes, whatever the situation, be it God-made or man-made. ”
