Lawyer Arrested for Contempt in Oklahoma City Court
An attorney in Oklahoma City, who identifies as transgender, was taken into custody for contempt of court. This incident occurred during a court hearing in early February, where the lawyer was seen on video persistently interrupting the judge and resisting arrest.
A clip that circulated on social media shows Rob Hopkins, a lawyer who identifies himself as a man, having a heated exchange with the judge and another attorney involved in the case. At one point, multiple police officers moved in to arrest Hopkins after he shouted at the judge.
The judge remarked, “You interrupted me again. You are in contempt of court,” and added, “And you can wipe that fake smile off your face.” Frustrated, Hopkins apparently dropped his cell phone in reaction.
When reprimanded for this action, Hopkins defensively replied, “I didn’t throw it. I fell off the bench. Stop saying things that aren’t true, ma’am.”
The situation escalated when police officers attempted to handcuff Hopkins, who insisted he was not resisting despite ongoing physical struggles. “Stop resisting,” an officer instructed, but the lawyer refused to comply, leading to a chaotic scene in the courtroom.
During the scuffle, Hopkins cried out, “I can’t breathe,” repeatedly asking for someone to call 911. He further demanded that a female officer handle his arrest.
Critics online pointed out the irony in Hopkins’s demands for specific treatment during his arrest. Commentators described his actions as unprofessional, noting a contradiction between wanting to assert a certain identity while simultaneously requesting different treatment in a moment of distress.
After the incident, Hopkins announced on Facebook the closure of the Hopkins Law Firm, thanking clients for their support over the years. The firm stated, “As we close our doors, we’d like to thank everyone for your kindness, support, and above all, loyalty over the past 13 years!”
The firm did not provide any comments following the arrest.
