'I learned my lesson': Colorado man loses $2K by same ghost tax preparer that also left Houston residents empty-handed – KPRC Click2Houston

houston – A Denver, Colorado, man contacted KPRC 2 after a friend shared one of our reports about two Houston-area women receiving thousands of dollars after attempting to file their taxes.

Lewis Ferguson said one of his colleagues recommended that he pay his 2022 taxes to the Green Money Group.

“I felt very confident,” Ferguson said.

A small business owner owed the Internal Revenue Service $35,000. He said Green Money Group’s owners said they could make significant cuts.

“When we hired her, we sent her all of our tax information and provided reviews and second opinions,” Ferguson said.

He was charged $5,000 to complete the application.

However, I was told that I needed to pay an installment before anyone at the company could start the application.

“She said she couldn’t start until it was paid. I said, ‘If you finish it, I can pay you in full,'” Ferguson said. remember. “She said, ‘No, you can’t start.'” And she tells me all these good things. ”

He paid $1,000. I haven’t heard from anyone since then.

“I called her back, ‘Can I make any progress?’ I asked if anything was going to happen. She said, ‘Well, I need another payment.’ I did. I said, “Okay, she’s already going to pay once, but I need some consequences.” So I paid another thousand dollars. So that was $2,000 that I gave her,” he said.

This is similar to the situation two Houston-area women found themselves in.

Alison Beth and Tatum Watkins lost hundreds of dollars trying to get Green Money Group to file their 2022 taxes.

Watkins and Beth made several attempts to get a refund. They emailed, texted, and called, but eventually the phone hung up.

KPRC 2’s Rilwan Balogun also sent multiple messages to the company, but received no response. He also left several voicemails.

Beth and Watkins hire separate tax preparers to prepare their returns, increasing their total costs.

Mr Ferguson said reporters then contacted Mr Balogun to share his experience.

“She moved from Texas and now she’s doing it here in Denver,” Ferguson said. She said: “She feels sorry for the people who gave her money. She’s very persuasive. Hopefully they get their money back.”

Balogun requested an interview with the IRS, but the agency did not provide one.

Representatives said they could not share any information about people’s finances or say whether Green Money Group was or had ever been investigated.

As for Ferguson, he wants an indictment.

“I think we all need to come together and press charges,” he said.
