British comedian Jimmy Carr recently chimed in on the backlash surrounding Shane Gillis’ joke about women at the gym, and his comments were quite amusing.
Gillis, who faced criticism from feminists and some left-leaning individuals, made a remark during his October 10, 2026, monologue on “Saturday Night Live,” suggesting that certain women dress like “whores” at the gym.
‘Shane is very clearly a lovely man. And he’s trying to make people laugh. That’s a joyful thing. Look at the intent, not the content.’
Carr, known for his candid interactions with fans during stand-up shows, decided to share his views on the Gillis situation on social media.
An audience member asked, “What do you think about the Shane Gillis controversy?”
To which Carr replied, “If that’s what passes as controversy, great!” This sparked laughter among the audience.
“Honestly, I say worse things than that every day. And I think the intent behind the joke is much more critical than the content itself,” he continued.
“Shane is genuinely a great person. All he wants to do is make people laugh, and that’s a beautiful thing. So, let’s focus on his intent rather than tearing apart the content. Don’t misconstrue it. He’s a fantastic guy, and an excellent comedian,” Carr added.
His comments received a warm response, and he took it a step further with a lighthearted jab at Gillis, saying, “I suppose this whole controversy means he might be hitting the gym less for a bit. But honestly, I doubt that’ll have a huge impact on his lifestyle.” This got some chuckles as well.
Carr’s video has been viewed over 2.6 million times since its posting on Monday.
Other commentators have suggested that Gillis’ joke was more about poking fun at himself than insulting anyone.
“I mean, let’s be real. Have you seen the shorts some of these guys wear? They’re like bait for fish! And the wrinkles… they all gather in the most ridiculous places,” Gillis joked to the “SNL” audience.
“Seriously, don’t look! They’re filming me in the background of like ten TikToks right now,” he added.
