U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is aiming to deport a woman described as a “criminal illegal alien” following a troubling incident in Florida where she allegedly threw coffee on an infant, a mother, and their dog during a dispute.
ICE confirmed the arrest of Nina Jaaskelainen, a Finnish national, in New Smyrna earlier this month. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin commented that Jaaskelainen has lived in the U.S. illegally for over 20 years and is currently facing assault and domestic violence charges. The agency has issued an arrest warrant to prevent her from harming another American family. McLaughlin emphasized a stance against violence by non-citizens.
In a separate incident, a woman was reported trying to run over a Border Patrol agent in Maine while he was apprehending illegal immigrants, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Reports indicate that Jaaskelainen, after the incident on November 14, pleaded not guilty in court. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office outlined that she confronted a mother who was walking her young son and dog, arguing that the dog wasn’t leashed. In the altercation, Jaaskelainen allegedly threw coffee at the mother, child, and dog, resulting in her arrest and subsequent charges.
Interestingly, Jaaskelainen first entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in April 1999 and was supposed to leave by July 1999, but she has remained in the country for 26 years without authorization. The Department of Homeland Security noted that she has ignored U.S. laws throughout this time.
When questioned, Jaaskelainen claimed that she threw coffee at her dog for being in a bad mood and mistakenly believed the mother and child were trespassing on her property.
Official statements also mentioned that Jaaskelainen denied intentionally targeting the mother or the child with the coffee.
