The Idaho school system has ordered one of the teachers to remove posters that “everyone is welcomed.”
However, Sarah Inama, 35, a teacher at Lewis and Clark Middle School, has refused after receiving an order from the West ADA School District on Feb. 3.
“I beat them, but I was very sad about it,” Inama said. Idaho politician this week. “And for the next few days I couldn't stop thinking about it. I came back with my husband and baby on Saturday, and I put it back.”
One sign reads as “Everyone is welcome here.” Other posters state that “in this room, everyone is welcome, important, accepted, respected, encouraged and cherished.”
“We were told that “everyone is welcome here” is not something that everyone believes. That makes it a personal opinion,” Inama adds. It was insisted by KTVB.
The district provided an email to politicians and indicated that it had instructed the district's chief academic officer, Marcus Myers, to remove the signs because it had broken rules tied to state dignity and non-discrimination related to public education laws and school policies, and that tied to school policies that require “content and reliable in a positive learning environment.”
The district told the newspaper it feared that the two signs would “cautiously cause splitting and controversy.”
He also said the message on the sign “everyone is welcome here” was not an issue, but pointed out a different skin toning hand.
Leaders at West Ada schools sent out a district-wide memo on Wednesday, highlighting the policy amidst the backlash.
“Like well-coached sports teams, education success comes from following a structured game plan,” says a memo obtained by KTVB.
“Every player knows that they have to work within the rules to maintain fairness and consistency while bringing their strengths and personality to the game.”
Inama said he was warned that the signs had improved by the end of the May year.
“Obviously, losing my job would be easy and not ideal,” she told politicians.
“I miss my students so much. It's going to be a real financial challenge for me. But I feel fundamentally… I'm so unstable and disturbed by what they want from me. I can't be satisfied with it.”
