Illegal Immigrant Sentenced for Child Sex Trafficking in Omaha
Kavankumar Patel, a 27-year-old illegal immigrant from India, was sentenced to ten years in prison for his involvement in a child sex trafficking operation in Omaha, Nebraska, according to the Justice Department.
Patel, originally from Gujarat, faced two counts of sex trafficking minors and received a sentence without the possibility of parole. Following the completion of his prison term, he will be deported.
Initially, Omaha police were investigating a theft connected to Patel, but their inquiries uncovered a more alarming situation. They engaged the Homeland Security Task Force, which led to the rescue of two minors, aged 15 and 16, who had been brought to a motel for exploitation.
During the investigation, the girls reported that hotel staff pressured them into performing sexual acts to reduce their motel costs. Multiple workers later acknowledged engaging in sexual activities with the minors. Patel, who also worked at the hotel, admitted in court that he intended to “confine, secure, and maintain minors in hotels.”
Interestingly, many hotels across the U.S. are run by members of the large Patel family, which has seen a substantial rise in illegal immigrants from India. This influx of low-wage laborers is often believed to contribute to other illicit activities, including prostitution and drug-related crimes.
U.S. Attorney Leslie Woods stated, “Our team, alongside law enforcement, is dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable victims in our communities. The Homeland Security Task Force played a crucial role in rescuing these children from a horrific situation. If anyone suspects human trafficking in their area, they should reach out to state or federal authorities to help combat this issue in Nebraska.”
Additionally, five other individuals have been charged in connection with the sex trafficking ring. Those apprehended include Eduardo Jose Perdomo, 36, and Michelle Martinez Gonzalez, 28, both facing charges related to conspiracy to engage in human trafficking and sex trafficking minors through coercion.
Other suspects, Sumit Chaudhary, 23, and Vishal Goswami, 31, are also charged with sex trafficking minors using force or deception.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that human trafficking charges can carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment, significant fines, and extended supervised release periods.
