U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (CBP) said Thursday that an Indian man convicted of a child sex crime and given a light sentence was released from a Maryland detention center without warning to federal immigration authorities. It was announced that he had been arrested last month.
The unidentified 32-year-old man was arrested on March 20 near his home in Ellicott City, 58 miles north of Washington, DC.
“The presence of this predator in our community posed a significant threat to children in our Maryland neighborhoods,” said Matthew Elliston, acting field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Baltimore. “We cannot allow non-citizen sex offenders to roam the streets of our communities. ERO Baltimore will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending the most egregious non-citizen offenders. .”

The man entered the United States on December 12, 2019 at Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Virginia. non-immigrant visitor. According to ICE, he was arrested by CBP officers on November 14, 2021, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, as he was boarding a Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha, Qatar.
Wanted for child sex crimes
The arrest is based on a warrant for child sex crimes in Montgomery County, Maryland, according to an ICE news release. He was placed on sex offender parole by CBP until November 12, 2022 and turned over to the New York Port Authority and New Jersey Police Department for extradition to Maryland.
CBP filed an immigration detainer against him at a federal prison in Brooklyn, New York. He was then taken into custody by Montgomery County Police and charged with sexual abuse of a minor and four counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
On February 15, 2022, police in Howard County, Maryland, also arrested the Indian national and charged him with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
On February 16, 2022, another detainee was allegedly placed in his place at the Howard County Detention Center.

He was found guilty in Montgomery County Court on August 10 of the same year. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for a minor charge of sexual abuse, but the judge suspended all but 18 months of the sentence. He was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for third-degree criminal sexual conduct, but the judge suspended the sentence for 10 years.

He was ultimately sentenced to five years of supervised probation.
Nearly two weeks later, the suspect was found guilty of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Howard County Court and sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison. Similar to Montgomery County, a Howard County judge suspended all but 18 months of the sentence, according to ICE.
An immigration detention complaint was filed at the Howard County Jail on February 1st, and the suspect was issued a notice to appear before an immigration judge on February 25th.

“Howard County Detention Center denies ERO Baltimore immigration detainees honor and released an Indian sex offender from custody on March 20,” ICE said in a statement. “Later that day, deportation officers from ERO Baltimore’s Criminal Apprehension Program arrested him in Ellicott City.”
A federal immigration judge ordered the man to be deported to India.
