Indian Man Who Crashed Car, Injured Passengers Admits Guilt to Migrant Smuggling

Illegal Immigration Smuggling Attempt Ends in Disaster for Indian Citizen

Indian nationals now face the possibility of prison time and deportation after a failed illegal immigration smuggling operation that resulted in severe consequences.

Aryan Deshwal, a 21-year-old from India, recently admitted to conspiracy charges related to alien smuggling and five counts of the same. This information comes from the Department of Justice (DOJ). Deshwal’s attempt to smuggle five undocumented immigrants from Canada to the U.S. in November 2024 ended badly when he tried to escape from Border Patrol, leading to a vehicle mishap that injured his passengers.

“This case demonstrates the hazards associated with alien smuggling and the risks posed by smuggling networks to both individuals and federal agents,” noted a spokesperson for John Salcone in an official statement.

“Deshwal endangered not only the lives of the individuals he was smuggling but also those of the border agents trying to intervene, along with other drivers on the road,” Salcone added. “Fortunately, he has been apprehended and is being held accountable for his actions.”

Federal prosecutors shared that Deshwal picked up five individuals on November 21, 2024, who had just crossed the US-Canadian border illegally. When approached by Border Patrol, he accelerated, leading to a chase. Ultimately, Deshwal lost control of his vehicle, which overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on its side.

As per the DOJ, all occupants, including Deshwal, were taken to a hospital in New York, where one passenger underwent emergency surgery due to serious injuries sustained in the crash.

“This reckless behavior underscores the genuine dangers of human smuggling and highlights that smugglers often disregard the lives they put at risk for quick profits,” remarked Raymond Bresnahan, a Border Patrol agent responsible for the area, regarding the incident.

The DOJ indicated that Deshwal could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for his role in immigration smuggling. After completing his sentence, he will also undergo removal proceedings.

While this incident might seem small when compared to illegal immigration activities at the southern border, the northern U.S. also sees its share of undocumented crossings each year. Deshwal was arrested in the northeastern sector of Border Patrol during the Biden administration’s immigration crisis.

Additionally, there’s been another case involving Indian nationals that has drawn the attention of federal prosecutors. Harjinder Singh, an undocumented Indian resident in the U.S., has been charged with three vehicular homicides after reportedly making an illegal U-turn on a Florida highway, resulting in three fatalities. Investigators found that Singh, despite holding a commercial driver’s license, had limited English proficiency and was not familiar with U.S. road signs.
