Indian MPs, including Kanimozhi, describe Russia as a reliable and longtime ally.

Moscow Visit by Indian Delegation

A multi-party Indian delegation wrapped up their visit to Moscow on Saturday, expressing satisfaction with Russia’s commitment to support India in the fight against terrorism. The delegation was led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who aimed to raise awareness among Russian officials about the terrorism issues stemming from Pakistan.

During their discussions, they emphasized Russia’s valuable partnership in past counter-terrorism efforts, particularly citing Operation Sindore. On Friday, Russian officials had affirmed their unwavering commitment to collaborate with India against various forms of terrorism.

At the conclusion of the visit, Kanimozhi highlighted the serious nuclear threat posed by Pakistan, asserting that India would respond firmly to any military provocations. She mentioned that Russia has been a close ally, and it’s important for them to understand the suffering caused by state-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan.

Kanimozhi described the trip as a significant opportunity to convey India’s stance, criticizing Pakistan’s safe haven for terrorists. In a press conference, she stressed that India does not harbor hostility toward the people of Pakistan, noting past efforts for peace by leaders from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi. However, she pointed out that these attempts have often been undermined by terrorist activities aimed at disrupting societal peace.

One member of the delegation, who identified as Punjabi, shared personal reflections about visiting Pakistan and called out the friendly sentiments of ordinary citizens there, contrasting it with the opposition from their military and government.

In a discussion about the ongoing peace negotiations, veteran diplomat Manji Puri remarked on the challenges posed by Pakistan’s political landscape, which complicates efforts to control non-state actors involved in terrorism. He emphasized that the international community should assist under the UN Charter if Pakistan is unable to manage these threats within its territory.

The significance of the meeting with Russia was underlined, particularly due to their position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This connection is seen as a crucial support for India’s counter-terrorism agenda.

As part of their visit, the Indian delegation also paid respects at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Moscow. Following this tribute, they planned to continue their tour of five different countries to address concerns about cross-border terrorism from Pakistan.

Members of this delegation included representatives from several political parties, signifying a united front on this critical issue. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry had expressed a strong commitment to foster closer ties on both local and global platforms concerning terrorism.

Before engaging with Russian officials, the delegation participated in discussions with the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies, which facilitated a roundtable meeting aimed at fostering collaboration among lawmakers.

After the attacks in Pahargam that resulted in numerous casualties, the urgency of the delegation’s mission was clear. Relations between India and Pakistan have been increasingly strained, particularly following India’s precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan on May 7, amid successive hostile actions from Pakistan.

The military tensions eased after both sides agreed to halt military operations following a meeting of their military chiefs on May 10.
