An Iowa man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his father in the face following an argument over the man’s “smelly feet,” police said.
David Carpenter, 48, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted murder and child endangerment after calling police and admitting to shooting the father while the child was in the room. KCRG reported
Police were called to a Burlington home on Sunday around 9:30pm after reports of gunshots. The Fort Madison Daily Democrat reported.
Carpenter’s father, William Carpenter, told police a violent argument ensued after Carpenter told his son his feet stink.
As the fight escalated, David Carpenter allegedly said he was going to shoot his father and went to a bedroom to get a gun, according to the criminal complaint.
He then returned to the living room, where his father was sitting on a motorized scooter, and continued yelling at his father about the gun, according to KCRG.
David Carpenter reportedly told police he pulled a gun from behind his back, pointed it at his father’s face and accidentally pulled the trigger.
Police say two children under the age of 14 were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

David Carpenter told detectives that his son was watching television in the living room when the shooting occurred, the newspaper reported.
David Carpenter has been charged with attempted murder and child endangerment and is being held in the Des Moines County Jail on $100,000 cash-only bail.
Authorities said William Carpenter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. in Des Moines County Court.
The shooting remains under investigation.
