Iowa Senate race positions Josh Turek and Ashley Hinson after party primary victories

Iowa Senate Race Sees Turek Secure Democratic Nomination

Iowa Democratic Rep. Josh Turek has emerged victorious in his party’s Senate primary, aiming to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst. This win, reported by the Associated Press, sees Turek, a Paralympian, overcoming state Sen. Zach Walls in the Iowa Democratic primary. He is now set to go head-to-head with Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, who has secured her party’s nomination.

The seat, currently held by Republicans, is a major focus for Democrats, and this contest is part of a critical group of showdowns in the upcoming midterm elections, which will influence whether Republicans can keep their narrow majority in the House.

Turek, a moderate Democrat who flipped a Republican-held Iowa House seat in 2022, received endorsements from notable figures like former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

On the other side, Walls, considered a progressive candidate and likened by Republicans to New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, garnered support from Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. This Democratic primary captured significant national interest, drawing in considerable funding from outside sources.

In terms of GOP candidates, Hinson, a former TV news anchor and a third-term representative, defeated former state senator Jim Carlin in the Republican primary, with significant backing from former President Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Senator Ernst.

Interestingly, Iowa, previously a crucial battleground state during President Obama’s elections, has tilted more to the right in recent years. In fact, Trump led in the state by notable margins in the last three election cycles, reflecting a shift in voter sentiment.

Currently, Republicans hold both Senate seats in Iowa, all of the congressional districts, and every statewide office except for state auditor. Yet, as the midterms approach, Democrats seem to be gaining traction, especially after flipping two Republican-held state Senate seats in a special election last year.

Despite ongoing challenges like the war with Iran—which has gained less public support—sustained inflation, and rising gas prices, the dynamics in Iowa could present some interesting surprises for the upcoming elections. The race to replace Ernst, a retired Army reservist and former Iowa National Guard soldier, is heating up and will be worth watching closely.
