IRS Phases Out Paper Check Tax Refunds

The Internal Revenue Service has decided to stop offering taxpayers the option to receive refunds as mailed checks. This change marks a significant shift in how refunds are processed.

According to statements from the IRS and the U.S. Treasury, the transition away from paper checks has officially begun. Taxpayers will now receive their refunds through direct deposit or other electronic payment methods, which I guess makes sense, given the trend toward digital transactions.

“This is the first step in a broader transition to electronic payments,” the IRS mentioned in a statement. They also indicated that detailed guidance regarding 2025 tax returns would be issued before the 2026 filing season begins.

For now, taxpayers can still use existing forms and processes to file their taxes. It seems that the IRS believes this change will enhance protection for taxpayers, speed up refunds, and cut down on costs.

It’s interesting to note that most individual taxpayers are already accustomed to receiving their refunds via direct deposit. The IRS revealed that over 93% of refunds were already issued this way in the last filing season, which is quite a shift. Just last year, about 7% of taxpayers opted for paper checks, showing that most have transitioned to electronic methods.

While the filing procedures will remain unchanged for now, the way refunds are processed is changing. For those without bank accounts, options like prepaid debit cards and digital wallets are available, which could simplify things for many.
