IRS to axe 6,000+ workers amid Trump’s cost-cutting sweep

The Internal Revenue Service reportedly notified staff that more than 6,000 people will be let go before the end of the week.

The decision follows President Donald Trump's direction to cut probation workers across the federal government.

“We will abolish the Internal Revenue Service.”

Internal email obtained with CBS News Over 3,500 of the affected people revealed that they were trial samples from the IRS SMEs/self-employed sector.

An email signed by SBSE Commissioner Lia Colbert and SBSE Deputy Commissioner Maha Williams noted that employees will be notified on Thursday whether their position has been affected.

“Details are still under development, but we understand that our 3,500 SB/SE probation adoption will be completed by the end of this week.”

What is expected to end is “not important for the filing season,” the news agency added.

Another email was sent to the manager of the IRS' large business and international divisions, requesting that they work in the office on Thursday and Friday. The number of staff affected by that department remains unknown.

Before beginning a government-wide purging of probation employees, the Trump administration offered to acquire a “deferred resignation” that would allow workers to retain their salaries and benefits until September 30th .

Neither the IRS nor the White House responded to CBS News requests for comment.

The cuts follow a visit from a staff member at the Government Efficiency Bureau last week.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Fox News' Jesse watters Wednesday that Trump's goal is to “repeal the Internal Revenue Service and make all outsiders pay.”
