During a recent meeting, California Rep. Sara Jacobs took the opportunity to mock Secretary of State Marco Rubio about his shoes. This exchange occurred after she pressed Rubio to declare who won the 2020 presidential election. In response, Rubio pointed out that they were in a foreign affairs context.
“Alright then, you can’t answer the question,” Jacobs retorted, raising her voice while he tried to explain his reasoning for avoiding domestic political discussions.
Jacobs continued to interrupt Rubio, asserting, “Mr. Secretary, it seems you struggle with acknowledging facts. You won’t say that the president lost the 2020 election, nor will you admit that President Trump is failing in this reckless war of choice, and it’s like you can’t even accept that the shoes the president bought for you are too big.”
By the end of her comments, Rubio appeared somewhat bewildered. “What shoes is she talking about? What’s going on?” he remarked.
Jacobs seemingly referenced an image of Rubio in oversized dress shoes, which sparked a flurry of commentary among critics looking for deeper implications about Trump and Rubio.
Rubio remarked, “I’m not sure about the shoes. [Trump] gave me some Florsheim shoes; they fit fine. I honestly don’t know what she’s referring to.”
Jacobs interjected again, complimenting, “Your shoes look very nice today, Mr. Secretary.”
Rubio, puzzled, replied, “How can you even see them? They’re down here. Are we talking shoes now? Is this the Foreign Affairs Committee or a circus?”
Rubio was meant to discuss President Trump’s foreign policy concerns, particularly regarding the Iran situation. Instead, he found himself addressing footwear choices.
Some might find Jacobs’ remarks off-putting, as they seem to stem from a confusing mix of aggression and rudeness.
On the other hand, Rubio maintained his composure, joking off the shoe comments, although it was clear he was troubled by the lack of seriousness in the discussion—something many might agree with.
