Isaiah Rider Returns to Prison

Former NBA player and slam dunk contest champion, Isaiah Rider, has found himself back in prison.

Authorities in Arizona apprehended Rider after he didn’t follow a court directive, according to a report that surfaced Sunday night.

He was taken into custody on Thursday evening and processed into jail the following morning.

Currently, he will remain detained until Tuesday due to a misdemeanor charge tied to a previous conviction.

Rider’s legal troubles have continued to escalate since December. Just last month, he was incarcerated twice following an order of protection that his estranged wife, Vanessa, had filed against him in July.

It’s uncertain if this recent arrest is connected to that protective order.

On December 4, he was apprehended in Gilbert, Arizona, for violating a court ruling and faced charges for obstructing justice. Then, just a few weeks later on December 15, he was arrested again for not showing up in court where a judge was set to assess whether to extend the protective order against Vanessa.

When Vanessa sought that order of protection last summer, she alleged that Rider had been increasingly aggressive towards her. She recounted incidents where he reportedly made threats, including telling her and their 15-year-old son that he would “span her ass.” Another troubling remark she attributed to him was about kicking down a door and yelling at her.

Rider has denied these claims, arguing that they emerged from the fallout after he filed for divorce in November 2024.

Over his nine-season career in the NBA from 1993 to 2002, Rider played for several teams including the Timberwolves, Trail Blazers, Hawks, Lakers, and Nuggets. He did achieve some accolades, winning an NBA championship with the Lakers in 2001, although he wasn’t included in the playoff roster that season. Additionally, he captured the Slam Dunk Contest title in 1994.
