New Israeli Offensive in Gaza Amid Tensions
Israeli forces initiated a fresh round of attacks in the Gaza Strip late Friday evening. This escalation comes on the heels of reported friction between the Trump administration and Israeli officials, just hours after President Trump wrapped up his notable trip to the Middle East.
The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has labeled this operation as Gideon’s Tank. It encompasses extensive airstrikes and the mobilization of troops, aimed primarily at overcoming Hamas and facilitating the release of Israeli hostages.
According to a social media update from the IDF, “This operation will achieve all the objectives of the war in Gaza.” Local health authorities in Gaza reported that the overnight assault resulted in at least 58 fatalities, raising the total death toll to over 300 since Thursday.
During his four-day visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE—skipping Israel altogether—Trump expressed unease regarding the situation. “We’re examining Gaza closely, and we’re going to address it. Many people are in dire conditions,” he shared with reporters.
A prominent figure, Antonio Guterres, voiced his concerns on social media, emphasizing the inhumane plight of Palestinians in Gaza. He criticized the ongoing siege and starvation, calling for an immediate end to the blockade on humanitarian aid and asserting the need for action in this moment of moral clarity.
The initiation of these latest attacks seems to highlight the stark contrast between the president’s diplomatic strategies and Israel’s military tactics. Recent reports indicate that Washington has been exploring potential agreements with Hamas and Houthi rebels in Yemen.
There are also claims that the Trump administration is crafting a controversial proposal to relocate up to 1 million Palestinians from Gaza to Libya. In return, the U.S. purportedly would not freeze $1 billion in Libyan assets. Critics have labeled this proposal as both logistically challenging and ethically dubious.
On Saturday morning, Palestinian media reported that Israeli forces were advancing toward Deial Bhara, indicating a new front in the ongoing ground operations. Meanwhile, the BBC noted that Hamas has re-entered indirect negotiations in Qatar, with no apparent conditions from either side. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed this development, seeing it as a shift in Hamas’ prior approach.
Katz identified Mohamed Singhwar as a key commander within Hamas in Gaza, noting that he was implicated in the recent strike and significantly involved in the terrorist attacks that unfolded on October 7, 2023.
On another note, as Israeli military actions intensified, so too did the humanitarian crisis. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, backed by the U.S., announced plans to start distributing aid by the month’s end. However, U.N. officials cautioned against diverting from established aid channels.
“Don’t lose time considering alternative methods for aid distribution,” said U.N. Secretary-General Tom Fletcher. “We already have a plan in place,” he added.
