Israel’s Defense Minister Issues Directive on Gaza-Bound Aid Fleet
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has instructed the military to prevent an aid fleet from reaching Gaza, which has connections to notable activist Greta Thunberg.
During a statement on Sunday, Katz directed the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to take measures that are, well, quite stern—to stop the fleet from making its way to Gaza. He emphasized Israel’s opposition to any efforts aimed at breaching the blockade or supporting terrorist factions but didn’t go into detail about the specific tactics the IDF might employ.
The vessel in question is named Madleen and is operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. It’s carrying a multitude of activists along with humanitarian supplies. The ship reportedly set sail from Italy earlier in the month and was approximately 160 nautical miles from Gaza by Sunday afternoon.
The coalition has indicated that the cargo includes various essentials like dairy products, diapers, sanitary items, medical supplies, crutches, and even children’s prosthetics. Organizers describe the mission as a “peaceful act of resistance by citizens.”
In response, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition took to Instagram, alleging that Israel is using “unfounded smears” to justify their threatening behavior. They assert, “We are not threatened,” which kind of raises eyebrows about the escalating rhetoric.
Israel has upheld a naval blockade of the Gaza Strip since 2007, primarily citing concerns over the potential smuggling of arms to Hamas and other extremist groups. This blockade, though partially backed by Egypt, remains a point of contention among international observers.
The situation around this aid fleet is quite tense, particularly as violence in Gaza continues. Reports indicate that at least five individuals were killed in a shooting incident near two aid distribution sites controlled by humanitarian organizations from Israel and the U.S.
As for Greta Thunberg, she has yet to release any formal comments regarding her involvement in this mission.
