Israel stops Greta Thunberg’s ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’ from breaking the Gaza blockade

Israeli Navy Intercepts Global Sumud Flotilla

The Israeli Navy has reportedly intercepted multiple vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was carrying pro-Palestine activists and humanitarian supplies. This information comes from Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

The flotilla consisted of 47 boats and more than 500 activists. Notable figures included climate change advocate Greta Thunberg and Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry released footage showing the military boarding the flotilla, stating, “Several vessels from the Hamas-Sumud flotilla have been safely stopped, and their passengers are being taken to an Israeli port. Greta and her companions are safe and healthy.”

While the boarding was taking place, activists could be heard chanting “Free Palestine!”

The primary aim of this flotilla was to breach the blockade surrounding Gaza and deliver much-needed humanitarian aid, as well as to highlight the suffering of Palestinian people.

Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, mentioned that the boats will be towed to the port of Ashdod, where the activists will undergo processing and likely deportation.

Prior to the interception, activists stated that some of their boats were attacked by drones in the waters south of Greece. This prompted Spain and Italy to deploy navy ships in case of a rescue need.

The flotilla announced last Wednesday that they had encountered “unidentified drones and communications jamming,” leading to “at least 13 explosions” affecting several boats.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries due to the drone strikes, although they caused some vessel damage and hindered communications. The exact source of the drone attacks remains unknown.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry accused the flotilla organizers of having links to Hamas, claiming that the mission’s “sole purpose” was to provoke tensions.

“Israel, Italy, Greece, and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem have consistently offered the flotilla a peaceful way to deliver any aid they might have to Gaza. However, the flotilla declined because their intent is not aid but provocation,” the ministry noted in a post on X.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the flotilla’s objectives, stating, “This is a humanitarian mission that would not be necessary if the Israeli government permitted aid entry. They pose no threat to Israel.”

The interception of the flotilla occurs as President Donald Trump has recently introduced a 20-point peace plan aimed at resolving tensions between Israel and Hamas, which could pave the way for ending the ongoing war in Gaza and establishing a pathway for Palestinian statehood.

However, reports indicate that Hamas is likely to dismiss Trump’s plan, asserting that it only serves Israeli interests and overlooks those of the Palestinian populace.

This latest venture marked Thunberg’s second attempt at leading a flotilla near the blockade, following a similar interception in June.
