Israeli Strikes Target Houthi-Controlled Ports in Yemen
The Israeli military has launched focused attacks on the ports of Hodeida and Salif in Yemen, aiming to weaken the Houthi Group’s military capabilities. This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, particularly as the Houthis have been responding to the Israeli-Hamas situation by launching missiles towards Israel.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claim that these ports were being utilized for weapon transfers. Their goal was to effectively “neutralize” the ports to impact the Houthis’ military strength further. The IDF has also urged local residents to evacuate to minimize civilian casualties. They noted in a statement: “The IDF has struck and dismantled infrastructure associated with the Houthi terrorist organization in the ports of Hodeida and Salif, which are being used for weapon transfers, exemplifying the abuse of Houthi infrastructure.”
Local reports indicate that the strikes resulted in at least one death and nine injuries. Residents of Hodeida described hearing four significant explosions and saw smoke rising from the port following the attacks. This operation is part of Israel’s larger strategy aimed at disrupting the Houthi supply chains and economic resources.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a warning to the Houthis, stating that any further missile attacks against Israel could lead to dire consequences for both their military capabilities and leadership. They specifically mentioned that Houthi leader Abdul Malik Al-Houthi could become a target, similar to leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah. “If the Houthis continue their missile strikes, they will suffer significantly, and their leaders will too,” the joint statement read.
Nevertheless, the Houthis remain defiant. Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, a senior member of the group, dismissed Israel’s threats as an “illusion,” claiming it aims to distract from its failures by setting impossible objectives. The Houthis, alongside Hamas and Hezbollah, form part of Iran’s “axis of resistance” and exert considerable influence over a large section of Yemen’s population.
The conflict between Israel and the Houthis has intensified since the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas War in October 2023. The Houthis have launched numerous missile and drone attacks on Israel, with their rhetoric echoing “Death to America, Death to Israel.” In the wake of renewed Israeli attacks against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis escalated their actions, reportedly firing 34 ballistic missiles and at least 10 drones into Israel since March 18.
