Italy Rejects Proposal to Replace Iran for World Cup
Italy is eager to qualify for this year’s World Cup, but not at the expense of Iran’s participation. Reports indicate that FIFA requested to substitute Iran with Italy for the tournament in North America this summer. However, Italian sports officials quickly dismissed the notion as “not appropriate.”
Italy’s Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, stated on Thursday, “Firstly, it’s not possible. Secondly, it’s not a good idea.” He emphasized that decisions regarding qualification should be made on the field.
The president of the Italian Olympic Committee, Luciano Buonfiglio, also expressed his discontent with the idea, saying, “I would be offended. You need to qualify for the World Cup.” Adding to the sentiment, Italy’s Finance Minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti, branded the proposal as “shameful.”
Iran was among the first nations to secure a spot in the World Cup, while Italy has now missed qualifying for three consecutive tournaments, which led to the resignation of both the national team’s coach and the president of the football federation.
The Financial Times reported that the proposal from FIFA, possibly influenced by President Trump, aims to improve relations that have deteriorated due to comments made against Iran by both Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni regarding the ongoing conflict.
Last month, Trump mentioned on Truth Social that while he would welcome Iran’s participation in the World Cup, it may not be “appropriate” given the current situation. Still, Iran is preparing for matches in the United States scheduled for June, with FIFA maintaining that their games near Los Angeles and Seattle will proceed as planned.
FIFA has firmly stated that Iran will adhere to the World Cup schedule set for December, rejecting any negotiations to co-host the team’s matches with Mexico.
