J.T. Poston makes a seven-over par at Travelers — here's what happened

JT Poston’s Tough Day at the Travelers Championship

It wasn’t exactly JT Poston’s day during the final round of the Travelers Championship. What seemed like a promising start quickly went off the rails for the 33-year-old golfer, who recorded seven bogeys by the end of the round.

It all began on the 13th hole at TPC River Highlands. Poston managed to find the fairway, but his second shot landed him in a bunker to the right of the green. From there, things went downhill. After a tricky recovery from the bunker that left him 59 feet from the hole, his fourth shot unfortunately rolled off the green and straight into the water.

He had to take a penalty drop and attempted to get back on track with a sand wedge, but that shot came up short, landing in the water again. This forced another penalty drop—quite the frustrating situation.

“It’s not that rough, so you can really blow it up,” Poston mentioned. He added, “It’s in the grain, and I thought I’d get enough of the ball on it, but I just tried to hit a good chip.” Unfortunately, he couldn’t recover from the water mishap, ending up with yet another chip that rolled back on him, leading to yet another drop.

Eventually, he got the ball onto the green on his tenth stroke but missed the putt on the eleventh. Finally, he tapped in an 8-inch putt, ending the hole with a score of 12.

The 13th was a par 5, and to further his struggles, the next hole, a par 4, resulted in a double bogey. Overall, Poston finished the round with a score of 76, landing him 69th out of 72 participants.

When asked if he ever thought about taking his ball out of the rough, he seemed cautious. “I feel like I just jump around, so to speak, and it takes all the speed away. There’s a big false front, and you have to get through that,” he explained. “Looking back, I probably should have just aimed for 12 feet instead of going for 7. But in the moment, you feel like you can make that shot. We were 40th!”
