James Comey Surrenders Following Threat Charges

Former FBI Director James Comey voluntarily turned himself in to authorities in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday. He faces serious charges related to alleged threats against the president.

Comey’s situation arose from social media posts that many interpreted as inciting political violence. Reports indicated that he would be arrested prior to his initial court appearance.

In a brief session at the Eastern District of Virginia federal court, Comey did not present any defense arguments, which left some questions lingering.

Judge William Fitzpatrick remarked, “I don’t see why they are needed this time.”

In May 2025, Comey had posted a picture of a seashell he claimed to have collected from the beach, captioning it with a light-hearted note.

However, the number “8647” inscribed on the shell drew immediate scrutiny. The interpretation of “86” generally signifies removal, while “47” is associated with Trump, who was the 47th president.

Following the backlash, Comey deleted the controversial post, attempting to clarify his intentions. He claimed he had no idea individuals would connect the numbers with violence, asserting his opposition to aggression in any form.

On Tuesday, authorities formally charged him with making threats against the president and for communicating threats across state lines.

Previously, Comey had been indicted on separate charges related to allegations of politically motivated abuse of power. Those charges were dismissed after a judge ruled the interim U.S. attorney had been improperly appointed.
