Teacher’s Departure Over Social Media Post Sparks Outrage
A veteran physical education instructor from the Chicago suburbs has described his forced exit from teaching as “devastating and surreal.” James Heidorn, a well-regarded educator at Gary Elementary School in West Chicago, faced backlash last month after he posted “GO ICE” on Facebook, in reaction to local police agreeing to assist with immigration enforcement.
Heidorn’s brief statement ignited significant controversy within the largely Hispanic school community, leading to his administrative leave and a meeting with human resources on January 22nd. Initially, he tendered his resignation but later retracted it the same day, expecting to return that following Monday while the investigation unfolded.
However, the uproar had already reached a boiling point. Illinois state Senator Karina Villa criticized Heidorn’s post as “disturbing,” even as she expressed solidarity with the families who felt affected by it. Meanwhile, West Chicago Mayor Daniel Bovey condemned Heidorn’s comments as “hurtful” and “offensive,” emphasizing the trust between teachers and students, particularly regarding the impact of such declarations on children’s well-being.
“The problem is that children have a trusted adult to take care of them when their mother or father is not with them,” Bovey explained. He even organized a “listening session” for parents and local residents, during which they labeled Heidorn’s message “cruel,” raising concerns about children’s safety in light of the situation.
Heidorn maintained his perspective that his comment was meant to support law enforcement, not to offend or create fear among students or families. “It was all sparked by a two-word comment on my personal Facebook page,” he said, lamenting the intense pressure he faced prior to a complete and fair investigation, which eventually led to his resignation.
Reflecting on his departure, Heidorn mentioned the emotional toll of losing daily interactions with his students. “It’s been a roller coaster of shock and sadness,” he noted. He expressed feelings of frustration that the situation escalated without sufficient dialogue and regret over not being able to say proper goodbyes.
After a hearing with school officials, Heidorn resigned again before ultimately being dismissed. The fallout even cost him his position as a soccer coach at a nearby private school and created uncertainty about his future in education.
“Until now, all I wanted to do was teach,” he shared, highlighting his commitment to education, backed by a master’s degree aimed at enhancing his teaching skills. Despite the challenges, some community supporters have rallied around him, launching a GoFundMe campaign to attest to his dedication as an educator who “shows up every day for his students.”
