James Talarico encounters the anger of Black voters in the Texas Senate campaign

Republicans question missing Democratic Senate candidate

President Trump and Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton have raised eyebrows regarding the absence of Democratic challenger James Talarico, who has been off the campaign trail for nearly two weeks.

Talarico recently faced criticism for canceling an event scheduled for October 5 with a Black civic engagement group in Central Texas. This cancellation, due to his illness, frustrated the Central Texas African American Civic Engagement Symposium (CT-AACES), which had 325 people ready to attend. An email from CT-AACES, obtained by Fox News Digital, expressed disappointment at the abrupt cancellation, stating it caused “irrecoverable financial loss” and that Talarico’s campaign did not attempt to reschedule the event.

The group’s message noted, “While we understand Representative Talarico’s health required priority, we are deeply disappointed by the campaign’s decision to issue a flat cancellation rather than committing to a rescheduled date. This was a missed chance for Talarico to address community skepticism and show his commitment to Central Texas African Americans.”

This situation is just one example of the ongoing challenges Talarico’s campaign has faced in connecting with the Black community, raising doubts about the effectiveness of his previously announced $25 million initiative aimed at mobilizing Black voters.

A Democratic operative from the Austin area also voiced frustration regarding Talarico’s inconsistent outreach to Black Democrats and candidates running lower down the ballot. She pointed out that Black voters have varying opinions, rather than a uniform stance on Talarico. “There are pockets of distrust, and then there are those who are really unsure,” she explained.

In relation to the promised $25 million investment for direct outreach and community engagement, the operative stated that the expected resources have yet to arrive. “We’ve only seen 1 or 2% of what was promised, and then there’s just been silence since,” she lamented.

Adding to the unease were Talarico’s recent remarks during a Black voter coalition Zoom meeting, where he briefly spoke about his commitment but then seemingly ended his participation abruptly without engaging in a Q&A segment. In a previous town hall, a nurse directly called him out, expressing that, “Black people don’t trust you for this reason,” emphasizing that he needed to answer questions from the audience to prove his commitment.

Talarico has also faced backlash for comments made during his primary campaign, where he was accused of referring to rival candidate Collin Allred as a “mediocre Black man.” Allred responded sharply, underscoring his discomfort with such characterizations. Talarico later clarified that his statement was referring to Allred’s campaign tactics rather than a personal attack.

Critics have pointed out that Talarico’s campaign needs to do more to support fellow Democratic candidates, especially since some donors have already exhausted their resources on his Senate race. One operative vividly recalled pressing Talarico on the necessity of endorsing down-ballot candidates after observing the lack of support. “He was understanding, but I still haven’t heard back from his staff, which has been really frustrating,” she added.

Fox News Digital reached out to Talarico’s campaign for further comments regarding these issues.
