Campaign Moves and Controversies in Texas Senate Race

Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico seems to have opted for a pickup truck to enhance his Texas appeal in a recent campaign video. He’s seen driving a 2026 Ram 1500, as noted by journalist David Weigel. This vehicle, rented from Enterprise, was part of a video released on July 20th. Interestingly, in August 2025, Talarico was spotted driving a Chevrolet Colorado.

Weigel pointed out the peculiarities of Talarico’s ad, highlighting the switch in vehicles and suggesting it might not be a coincidence that rental plates were visible. This raised questions—was his own vehicle in the shop or something?

On the campaign trail, Talarico has faced sharp backlash from Republican circles due to his past stances on social issues, particularly regarding firearms and his interpretation of Christianity. A 2020 webinar recently resurfaced in which he supported gun licensing, an assault weapons ban, and mandatory safety standards for handguns. Talarico also labeled child gender reassignment as “lifesaving medical care,” a view he later contradicted by opposing gender reassignment surgery for minors in a June interview.

His opponent, Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, had a notable victory in the primary against incumbent Senator John Cornyn and attributes part of his success to an endorsement from former President Donald Trump made just before the election. A recent poll indicates Talarico holds a slight lead over Paxton, coming in 5 points ahead.

Paxton characterized Talarico’s positions as “weird” and questioned his connections to Texas, remarking on his fundraising efforts in San Francisco. He also referenced Talarico’s controversial claim about God being non-binary, arguing that traditional interpretations of the Bible suggest otherwise.

In 2023, the Texas Legislature voted to impeach Paxton due to various serious charges linked to an FBI investigation. However, he was acquitted by a jury of 16 senators.

As of now, Talarico’s team has not provided any comments regarding these ongoing developments.
