Jane Fonda to Host “Free Speech” Event in New York
Actress Jane Fonda, often remembered for her controversial past, is set to lead a “free speech” event titled “Rise Up, Sing Out.” This gathering in New York City will occur on June 14th, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s UFC Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C.
Fonda, who gained notoriety in the 1970s for her support of communist factions, expressed her determination to be vocal during these turbulent times. “This is our documentary moment,” she said. “I don’t want to be on the side of those who merely complain about how bad things are. I want to step up.”
The concert kicks off at 7:30 PM and boasts a lineup that includes Julia Roberts, Bette Midler, Patti Smith, and Rufus Wainwright, among others.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the event’s website emphasizes the power of choice in storytelling. It asserts that citizens can either let those in power dictate their narrative or strive to create a story that champions their rights and advocates for their future. “On June 14, we will continue to stand up, speak out, and organize,” the site proclaims.
Interestingly, both the concert and the UFC event are scheduled for Trump’s 80th birthday, adding a unique layer to the day’s significance.
Fonda has been outspoken against Trump and his policies since his presidency began. Back in March, she criticized him for allegedly attempting to erode American rights and transforming the nation into a “banana republic.” She condemned the public attacks on the arts, stating that funding for writers and artists has been cut, and warned of consequences for those who oppose Trump. “This is what occurs in banana republics and totalitarian regimes,” she argued.
Despite her claims concerning Trump’s mental fitness, he has successfully passed all medical evaluations. Fonda also voiced her opposition to the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros., calling the deal a “threat to democracy.”
