Former First Lady Jill Biden expressed her disappointment on Tuesday regarding the shift of some longtime Democratic allies during the 2024 campaign. Speaking on “The View,” while promoting her memoir, “View From the East Wing,” she noted, “So that really hurt.”
She added, “We’re not just the president and the first lady; we’re parents, grandparents. The pain we can endure is one thing, but for our children and grandchildren? That was tough.” Biden mentioned that it was particularly heartbreaking for her and Joe, considering the friendships they had nurtured for decades.
Jill Biden explained Joe’s resignation decision by pointing out that he had lost support from the Democratic Party and from friends they had known for 50 years. It was disheartening for her. She recalled that one of the memorable events of the 2024 election was the debate between then-President Biden and Donald Trump, noting how Joe struggled during the debate, which led some supporters to call for him to step down.
During her speaking tour, she shared that both she and Joe recognized he had felt “broken down” that evening. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg remarked on how many Democrats were pushing for Joe to resign behind the scenes. Jill, however, proposed a different perspective on the situation.
Goldberg pressed her on how it felt to hear others question Joe’s fitness for office, especially friends. Jill agreed, acknowledging that some friends indeed turned against them, which made it more poignant. “Some people joined in after the other side started stirring the pot,” she recalled.
When asked about former President Barack Obama, Jill said, “I think he has talked to her publicly,” reflecting a level of ambiguity in his private communications. She also shared that Nancy Pelosi had breakfast with Joe to discuss his predicament but did not speak with her privately.
In the midst of this political turmoil, Ana Navarro urged transparency, suggesting that if anyone had serious doubts about capabilities, they should address them directly rather than in public forums. Jill agreed with this sentiment.
