Senator Questions National Park Service’s Compliance with Trump’s Directives
Republican Indiana Senator Jim Banks recently raised concerns about whether the National Park Service (NPS) is adhering to President Donald Trump’s directives. He emphasized the need for the agency to avoid “ideological or divisive narratives” in the United States’ parks and monuments.
Banks shared letters with the Daily Caller News Foundation, addressing them to Home Secretary Doug Burgum and acting NPS official Jessica Bowron. His remarks follow Trump’s announcement earlier this year regarding an executive order aimed at publicly memorializing America’s extraordinary heritage in federal sites, including parks and museums. In his letter, Banks argued that the NPS seems to be undermining this executive order by not following “clear instructions.”
“Our memorials should reflect what makes America great, rather than just pushing week-by-week talking points to celebrate our founders and satisfy radical activists,” Banks stated in an exclusive comment to DCNF. The senator has also been overseeing federal agencies to ensure compliance with Trump’s initiatives.
Banks pointed out the NPS’s projects that he claims “diss” American heroes, asserting that this violates the President’s executive order. He believes this order appropriately counters long-standing efforts that cast American history in a negative light based on ideological beliefs.
The NPS has pushed various initiatives focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and “Environmental Justice” in recent years, aiming to encourage more inclusive narratives in national parks.
In his letter, Banks also sought answers regarding renovations and alterations made in relation to new projects, urging a review of any plans that conflict with Trump’s executive order.
