Joba Chamberlain Honors His Late Father at Savannah Bananas Game

Joba Chamberlain, the former Yankees pitcher, made a heartfelt appearance at a Savannah Bananas game on Thursday night. The 40-year-old took the mound in the fourth inning during a matchup in Nebraska, dedicating his performance to his late father.

Reflecting on the moment, Chamberlain expressed, “I lost my dad a year and a half ago, and when I looked up there, it was just like, ‘Dad, I’m here.'” He mentioned how significant it was to stand on that field, acknowledging the work Jesse Cole has done with the team.

Chamberlain remarked on how special it felt to share the experience with his son, noting, “It’s really ridiculously cool…to be able to watch me do those things. And there are a lot of kids watching that. That grows the game, and that’s the only thing we want to do.” After pitching, he raised his hat to the sky to honor his father, Harlan, who passed away in March 2025.

Harlan Chamberlain lived most of his life battling polio, which required him to use crutches. Despite his struggles, he instilled a strong sense of discipline in Joba as they grew up in Nebraska. Even on tough days, he would take time to play catch with his son and share pitching tips.

“Looking back, he always made sure I did my best and did everything I could to help me become the person he wanted me to be,” Chamberlain recalled.

Before returning to Lincoln’s Haymarket Park, Chamberlain had a notable college career, leading Nebraska to the 2005 College World Series and being drafted by the Yankees in 2006. Over his 10 seasons in MLB, he primarily pitched for the Yankees, Tigers, Royals, and Guardians.

Chamberlain quickly became a fan favorite after debuting with the Yankees in 2007, thanks to his impressive fastball and knack for performing in key moments. His career saw him switching between starting pitcher and relief roles, creating a lot of buzz among fans, particularly around the “Joba Rule.” However, his time with the Yankees was also marked by injury struggles.

With a career ERA of 3.81, Chamberlain recorded seven saves and 546 strikeouts. He played a key role in the Yankees’ 27th World Series victory in 2009, contributing during the playoffs with a 2.84 ERA.
