Warriors Owner’s Email Exchange Goes Viral
An email conversation between Joe Lacob, owner of the Golden State Warriors, and a fan gained significant attention following the team’s recent loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, where they fell 136-131.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked about the email exchange with fan Justin Dutari during a press conference, but he dismissed it as a minor issue. “It’s not a big deal,” Kerr told reporters, adding, “I don’t care about that.”
Dutari had reached out to Lacob expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s performance, specifically suggesting they require a “true second option” and that All-Star Jimmy Butler’s abilities are not being fully utilized. The email ended with a note of frustration.
While it’s not unusual for fans to communicate their concerns to team owners, they don’t always get a reply. This time, Dutari shared their exchange on Reddit, confirming Lacob’s response. Lacob expressed his own frustrations, saying, “Nothing is more frustrating than me. I’m working on it. It’s complicated. The style of play, the coach. Requests for players. League trends. Jimmy isn’t the problem.”
After Lacob’s comments, it seems Kerr might face additional questions about the implications for coaching decisions, especially given the mention of “coach’s requests.” Nonetheless, Kerr appears ready to move on and concentrate on the forthcoming games.
As of Tuesday, the Warriors held a record of 13 wins and 14 losses, placing them eighth in the Western Conference. Kerr is also in the last year of his contract, previously stating he wouldn’t seek an extension until he assessed how the season unfolds. His tenure has seen four NBA championships since the 2014-15 season, but the team hasn’t progressed past the Western Conference semifinals since their championship in 2022.
Kerr’s strategies have revolved around established stars like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, especially considering their established chemistry. That said, there’s discussion about whether adjustments are necessary, given the young talent within the team.
In his comments, Kerr acknowledged the shared frustration among the team, saying, “Joe is frustrated, I’m frustrated too, Steph and [Green]—everyone is annoyed. This is kind of how the league works.” He also expressed his discomfort with private emails being made public, remarking that it would complicate lives if everyone’s correspondence were circulated.
While both Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy continue to back Kerr amidst challenges this season, Curry has also voiced his support for Kerr’s continuation with the team beyond the current season.
