Former Senator Supports Collins in Maine Race
A prominent Republican senator, who Democrats are eager to challenge, is receiving unexpected support from a former member of their party, sending a clear message to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Joe Manchin, who transitioned from the Democratic Party to an independent position before his retirement, is heading to Maine to back Sen. Susan Collins, a campaign official confirmed.
Collins is facing a tough contest against former Maine state Senator Troy Jackson as she aims for a sixth term. The dynamic of the race shifted earlier this year after allegations of sexual assault led to Graham Platner withdrawing from the race.
Manchin’s upcoming campaign appearance with Collins aims to showcase her bipartisan achievements, he explained. This comes as Schumer and the Democrats have attempted to label Collins as compliant with former President Donald Trump, despite her record of diverging from him on critical issues, particularly his major legislative efforts.
Manchin emphasized that Collins is not aligned with Trump, intending to clarify her stance to Maine voters. His visit coincides with a busy time for Jackson, who has recently had several progressive figures, including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, supporting his campaign.
Collins’ representative remarked that the presence of such prominent figures from the far left signals to voters the direction Jackson might take if elected.
Manchin’s support for Collins serves not just as an endorsement but also as a nudge against Schumer and the Democratic establishment, particularly pointed after his own critical remarks about Democratic leadership in his memoir last year. He explicitly expressed his hopes for Republicans to regain control of the Senate to preserve the filibuster, viewing it as essential for maintaining balance in governance.
