Joe Scarborough Criticizes Gavin Newsom for Traveling Across the US While His State Faces 'Quality of Life Issues'

Gavin Newsom’s Political Tour Criticized by MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough

On Wednesday, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough expressed skepticism towards California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has recently embarked on a political tour outside his state while California faces numerous pressing issues.

Newsom’s two-day visit to rural South Carolina seems to indicate his aspirations for the 2028 presidential election. Scarborough remarked on “Morning Joe” that there’s a significant issue at hand, noting, “If it’s Jonathan Lemia, Gavin Newsom, he’s going to South Carolina; they’re discussing his presidential race. Back to California.” He implied that Newsom seems dismissive of vital quality of life problems in his home state.

During this segment, co-host Joe added that California has turned into a “boogieman” for Republicans due to persistent challenges such as crime and natural disasters.

Currently, Los Angeles is grappling with wildfires that have devastated over 40,000 acres, leaving thousands homeless. State leaders, including Newsom, have been criticized for their emergency response to these disasters.

Earlier this year, Newsom was seen in his car while a distressed resident from an affected area sought clarity on water shortages and the preparedness before the fire spread. He mentioned trying to reach former President Joe Biden multiple times but cited poor cell service as a barrier.

The situation in California reveals a lack of necessary resources to effectively combat these severe fires. In areas like Altadena and Palisades, fire hydrants struggled with low water pressure, a critical issue during emergencies. Research from Openthebooks found that, despite aid from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the city doesn’t allocate sufficient funds for maintaining fire hydrants.

Moreover, major cities like San Francisco have faced escalating issues with homelessness, drug trafficking, and various other crimes. Residents from one of San Francisco’s most crime-affected neighborhoods even filed a lawsuit in March 2024, alleging that city officials tolerated an outdoor drug market that exacerbates local crime.

Despite spending $24 billion on homelessness since 2019, California’s homeless situation has worsened significantly. As of 2024, the state recorded an unprecedented number of over 187,000 homeless individuals, nearly half of the nation’s total homeless population.

In addition, the state has seen a decline in its resident population, largely attributed to the high cost of living, rising homelessness, and ongoing crime issues.
