Scarborough Criticizes Vance’s Hungary Visit
On Tuesday, Joe Scarborough, co-host of “Morning Joe,” expressed outrage over Vice President J.D. Vance’s trip to Hungary, urging Republicans to confront what he termed “Russian authoritarianism.”
Vance made the announcement about his trip in a release on April 2, detailing engagements on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Hungary. During a recent address before supporters of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Scarborough argued that the Trump administration was inadvertently backing Russian President Vladimir Putin through its support of Orbán.
“Let’s discuss the collusion happening right now between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to get Orbán elected. Michael Weiss highlighted this last week; they have a history,” Scarborough asserted. He claimed that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was conversing with Hungary’s foreign minister, essentially strategizing to assist Orbán ahead of the elections.
Scarborough continued, “Donald Trump is doing everything he can to ensure Orbán’s election. J.D. Vance is there talking about believing in Western civilization, but it feels like he’s planting a stake in its heart alongside someone who openly despises Western liberalism.” He portrayed both Trump and Putin as working towards a similar aim of promoting anti-democratic figures across Europe.
Orbán has gained attention from the Democratic Party for his border security measures aimed at addressing illegal immigration and for opposing the immigration policies set by the European Union. However, recent polls indicate that his government may be behind in the run-up to the April 12 election, according to reports.
Scarborough lamented, “Where are the Republicans? Where are those who, like me growing up, believed in the ideals of the West? Where are the advocates for democracy, a free press, and robust elections? Where are my people?” He emphasized his desire for more Republicans in leadership to openly challenge these trends.
Furthermore, former President Barack Obama’s foundation has been actively working against Orbán’s government as well as other populist administrations in Poland and Romania. Interestingly, Orbán is considered one of Donald Trump’s key allies in Europe.
